Security screens and counters
Low-level pay windows LLPW1 to LLPW4
A counter that only works standing leaves a wheelchair user talking up to the glass, or sent round to a side window. The low-level range puts the opening at seated height, so everyone is served at the same counter, and two of the four builds carry a hearing loop.

Who is a low-level pay window for?
Wheelchair users, and staff or customers who are seated. The opening sits at a seated height, so they are served at the same counter as everyone else instead of at a separate window.
What does the Equality Act require at a counter?
The Equality Act 2010 expects service providers to make reasonable adjustments, including to physical features, so disabled customers are not put at a substantial disadvantage. A seated-height position and a hearing loop are two of the adjustments access guidance asks for at a counter. Your access consultant or building control confirms whether the counter as a whole complies.
Is this a DDA-compliant counter?
The Disability Discrimination Act was replaced by the Equality Act 2010 in England, Scotland and Wales, though "DDA compliant" is still how most people describe it. The low-level window gives the counter a seated position and, on LLPW3 and LLPW4, a hearing loop. Compliance is judged on the counter and its approach as a whole.
What height should the seated section be?
In England, Approved Document M asks for at least one section of a reception counter to be at least 1500mm wide, with its surface no higher than 760mm and a knee recess at least 700mm high. The window is made to the counter it goes into, so give us the counter height at survey.
Does it include a hearing loop?
LLPW3 and LLPW4 do: an integral hearing induction loop with electronic speech enhancement, which needs a 13amp socket. Approved Document M asks for a hearing enhancement system, such as an induction loop, at any reception point. LLPW1 and LLPW2 carry natural speech through the mullions.
Is a low-level window as secure as a standard pay window?
Yes. It uses the same 11.5mm glazing to BS EN 356 P4A and the same welded mild steel frame. Only the height of the opening changes.
