The risks
Your counter, your custody suite, your stores
This is the walk we do on the survey, and what we look at when we get there.
- 01
Your front counter
Your public-facing officers and staff deal with people in crisis, often alone at the counter and sometimes late at night.
- 02
Custody and interview
The doors, hatches and screens in these areas have to take deliberate attack and constant use, day in and day out.
- 03
Property and evidence
Your stores need access limited to named people with a record of every entry, so continuity of evidence holds up.
- 04
You cannot close
Nothing comes out of service for long, so the work has to be planned around live operations and your shift pattern.

Standards and guidance
The rules that apply
- Guidance
LPS 1175
The Loss Prevention Certification Board's standard for the intruder resistance of doors, screens and other building products. Our doors and gates are made to LPS 1175 SR1 and A1 ratings.
Read the guidance - Standard
EN356 and EN1063 glass
EN356 grades how well glass resists manual attack, such as hammers and axes. EN1063 grades bullet resistance. Most public counters are specified to EN356; EN1063 is for sites where a risk assessment identifies a firearms threat.
- Standard
College of Policing detention and custody guidance
Authorised Professional Practice on detention and custody covers the design and safety of custody environments. Bring your force standards to the survey and the specification will follow them.
FAQs
What estates teams ask when they specify
Something not covered here? Ring us and ask.
01732 926 352What rating should a front counter be?
Most front counters are specified to EN356 for manual attack. EN1063 bullet resistance is used where a risk assessment identifies a firearms threat. We talk through the risk at the survey. The highest rating isn't the default.
Can you work around a live station?
Yes. Work in operational buildings is phased and normally carried out of hours, with the programme agreed before we start.
Are screens and doors made to measure?
Yes. Screens, counters, doors and hatches are fabricated to size in our Edenbridge workshop, so they fit the opening you have.
Can property pass through without opening a door?
Yes. Transfer trays, vertical and horizontal hatches and bulk transfer units all move items between secure and public sides.
Why MerFen
One firm makes it, fits it and keeps it working
Most installers fit what a manufacturer sells them. We make the physical side ourselves, so the specification starts with the site.
